Caledonia Farmer's Market
Our girls love getting food scraps especially: tomatoes, watermelon, oranges, grapes, and lettuce!
They are free roaming hens, and forage majority of the day, but also have access to their chicken feed for additional nutrients.
Our hen breeds are:
Red Sex Linked
Buff & Lavender Orpington
Sapphire Gem
Speckled Sussex
Learn more about the individual breeds here.
Our son Murphy has been truly in love with the silkie breed of chickens ever since he saw them! So in January of 2024 we picked up 4 silkie chicks.
Silkies are incredibly difficult to sex when hatched, and the gender isn't known until they are about 3-4 months old. We took a gamble, and figured maybe we could get maybe 1 hen! 4 months later we had all 4 crowing in our garage (pre-homestead purchase). Frank came along a little later, and took the alpha roo position.
We started working on our first coop before we got our homestead June 2024.
The starter coop has two nesting boxes, and is fully insulated, top to bottom.
We knew about "chicken math", and began building a new 8x8 coop to accommodate more hens!

Since June 2024, we've been working, on clearing up, some of the much need brush on our property. Prior to this we did not have clear lines of sights.
My goal for 2025 is to build my very own roadside Farm Stand, with character. charm and a little bit of spice!
